The Tunisian oud player has always practised variations on his favourite theme: the Orient of perfumes and mysteries. Anouar Brahem knows that the strength of his instrument lies in its manifest softness, which exhales its timbre by imposing silence. His new quartet, notably featuring the brilliant British pianist Django Bates and the very expressive cellist Anja Lechner, provides an ideal setting for establishing a dialogue between melodies, rhythms, and timbres that Baudelaire, in his Correspondances, would not have disavowed: "...like amber, musk, benzoin and frankincense, which sing the transports of the spirit and the senses.
