The Trojan War has taken place. The King of Crete, Idomeneo, returns home after ten years of absence, but encounters a terrible storm on his journey. To appease Neptune, he promises to sacrifice the first person he meets on the shore, without suspecting that it will be… his own son! It was on this libretto by Giambattista Varesco that the Elector Karl-Theodor of Bavaria commissioned Mozart to compose an opera seria for the Munich Carnival of 1781. The composer poured all the ardour of his 25 years into it, magnifying the orchestra and chorus, inspired by the model of French lyrical tragedy. The result is music that is by turns tender and grandiose, interspersed with arias of dazzling beauty. After Oedipus and Pelléas et Mélisande, Wajdi Mouawad returns to the Opéra de Paris to direct Idomeneo.
