Faced with her indifference and the fear of a rival, he naively buys a love potion from Dulcamara, a travelling doctor, unaware that it is… a simple bottle of wine!
Although Gaetano Donizetti had only fourteen days to compose L'Elixir d'amour, which premiered at the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan in 1832, the opera has enjoyed uninterrupted success ever since.
A delightful score, interspersed with caressing and delicate arias like Nemorino's famous romance « Una furtiva lagrima », contributes to its status as a bel canto masterpiece.
Director Laurent Pelly transposes this melodramma giocoso to 1960s Italy, giving it an exhilarating scent of dolce vita.
