The story could be simple: a nobleman – Count di Luna – and a troubadour – Manrico – both desire the same woman: Leonora. But to this classic rivalry is added a two-generation vendetta, spiced with witchcraft, pyres, and swapped babies. Far-fetched? No matter! Le Trouvère is one of three masterpieces successfully created by Giuseppe Verdi in the 1850s, along with Rigoletto and La Traviata. Its success is due to a keen sense of drama and fiery music that transcends the libretto. At the height of his artistic maturity, Verdi offers each protagonist arias of breathtaking beauty and the choruses an anthology moment. Director Alex Ollé sets the action in the context of the First World War, apt to justify the extreme situations the characters face.
