The Fairy Queen
Ensemble Correspondances invites you to discover one of the jewels of English Baroque, Purcell's The Fairy Queen, a five-act semi-opera inspired by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Created at the Dorset Theatre in London in 1692, Purcell's arrangement is of rare fantasy: to Shakespeare's already relatively complex story are added parallel plots, whimsical, moving, and even burlesque or diabolical characters. The musical component of the work is prodigious, featuring some of Purcell's most beautiful airs, such as the poignant « O let me weep » or the sparkling « Thrice happy lovers », where the composer's art of counterpoint and theatricality are at their peak. A singular and enchanting musical fresco, which Ensemble Correspondances presents in a concert version, imbued with magic and humour.
