Overview
The Delacroix museum presents a new display exploring Eugène Delacroix's animal world, following the acquisition of two recently restored horse studies. Exhibited for the first time at the museum, the two studies of stallions, a chestnut and a golden chestnut, demonstrate Delacroix's keen interest in horses and their representation.
For the Romantic painter, horses, lions, and tigers were subjects of study and themes he depicted in numerous paintings, lithographs, and decorations throughout his career. The horses he saw during his trip to Morocco in 1832 helped fuel his imagination surrounding the horseman, whether a soldier or a participant in a fantasia. The paintings Delacroix considered as studies were not intended for exhibition or sale but served as references and sources of inspiration for him. This temporary presentation places particular importance on the painter's creative process.
