Two aristocratic neighbours are mourning lost loves and seem inconsolable. Their despair brings them closer, but their pride prevents them from admitting their love to each other. The clumsy pressures of rivals and servants plunge them into an inextricable muddle. Marivaux illustrates here the explosive cohabitation between susceptibility and love. The pretty words, elegant killer lines, and circumlocutions only serve to highlight a crude and touching humanity under the mocking gaze of the servants.
