Like Le Sacre du printemps, Kurt Weill’s Les Sept péchés capitaux is intimately linked to the history of the Théâtre. This sung ballet was premiered here on 7 June 1933 by singer Lotte Lenya with choreography by Balanchine. The work had been commissioned by a young and wealthy Englishman to be presented by the Ballets 33 troupe, freshly founded by George Balanchine and Boris Kochno. Cocteau was at one point considered for the libretto, which was finally written by Brecht (who later disowned his text). The score is infused with various popular genres (waltz, foxtrot, etc.) within a symphonic structure in the grand manner of a cantata. Nina Stemme, the greatest Isolde of her generation, is also an exceptional recitalist, equally at ease with Mahler’s visionary modernism and Weill’s ironic detachment.
