This concert, conducted by young Finnish conductor Emilia Hoving, celebrates composers who put Scandinavia on the map of great musical nations in the 19th and 20th centuries. Among them, the Danish Carl Nielsen demonstrates his talent as an orchestrator with a festive and sparkling work, his overture to the opera Mascarade, inspired by the man nicknamed the “Scandinavian Molière”, Ludvig Holberg. The Violin Concerto by the Finnish Jean Sibelius is a great classic of the violin and orchestra repertoire. Sibelius’s great Seventh Symphony will also resonate, along with the story of one of the most endearing fictional characters in Norwegian literature: the traveller Peer Gynt and his fantastic encounters with trolls.
