With Ear Witness, Simon Spang-Hanssen leads a contemporary jazz quartet where composition and improvisation continuously confront each other, within an open aesthetic, inherited from his collaborations with figures such as John Tchicai or Michel Portal, balancing formal rigour and freedom of play. On piano, Mario Canonge, whose career spans Martinique and Paris, Ultramarine with Nguyên Lê, brings a percussive style and mixed harmonies nourished by jazz and Caribbean influences, an essential presence on the French scene. On bass, Linley Marthe, a former member of the Joe Zawinul Syndicate, is renowned for his power and virtuosity, a dense, precise, and immediately identifiable sound in contemporary jazz fusion. On drums, Adriano Tenorio, with Brazilian heritage and European circulation, has collaborated with Mayra Andrade and Gregory Privat, offering a flexible, structuring style, deeply rooted in rhythm and movement. Together, they create a taut and organic collective language, where each voice maintains its identity while building a coherent whole, with subtle hints from Simon Spang-Hanssen's upcoming album Seconds Ago (release August 28, 2026) and a tribute to Félix Sabal-Lecco.
