A central figure of contemporary music in Canada, Raymond Murray Schafer is recognized for his experimental approach to composition as well as for his ecological thinking, as evidenced by his book The Soundscape: the world as music, published in 1977.
The composer explains about his vocal music that it seeks to establish a spiritual relationship with the environment. The Magic Songs, in particular, aim to "restore aspects of nature that have been neglected or destroyed by humanity.
" Estonian Veljo Tormis, particularly prolific in the genre of choral music, blends ancient Finnish shamanistic traditions with modern references in his work Raua needmine, which questions the use of natural iron for warlike purposes.
