Earth, Wind and Fire (usually spelled Earth, Wind & Fire) is an American funk disco band from Chicago, Illinois. The group was formed in 1969 at the initiative of Maurice White. It is notably known for hits such as Fantasy (1977), September (1978), Boogie Wonderland (1979), and Let's Groove (1981).
Its most notable characteristic is its ability to innovate by skillfully and uniquely introducing and blending elements from African, Brazilian, Cuban, and Caribbean musical traditions into its funk, which is characterized by a high-quality brass section (the Phenix Horns) and arrangements borrowed from both jazz and symphonic music.
Earth, Wind and Fire's music is sometimes even described as "symphonic funk." The group also stands out due to the complementarity of its two singers, Maurice White (baritone) and Philip Bailey (capable of singing in falsetto, whose remarkable vocal abilities span several octaves).
