About — The artist
Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez, alias Juanes, is a Colombian singer-songwriter and guitarist, born August 9, 1972 in Medellín, Colombia. His stage name comes from his first name and the first two letters of his middle name. In his music, Juanes combines Colombian rhythms such as cumbia and vallenato with rock and pop. Between 1987 and 1999, Juanes is a member of the heavy metal group Ekhymosis. After the group dissolved, Juanes moved to Los Angeles to pursue a solo career. In 2000, he released his first solo album, Fíjate bien, which won four Latin Grammy Awards.
Juanes became known in Colombia and the rest of America by using the music of rural Colombia (a mix of indigenous, Bolivian and Hispanic rhythms). He is also known for his humanitarian work, particularly through aid to Colombian victims of anti-personnel mines.
