About — The artist
Kokoroko (stylised as KOKOROKO) is an eight-piece band based in London, led by Sheila Maurice-Grey, playing a fusion of jazz and afrobeat. In February 2019, they were named 'ones to watch' by The Guardian, after their track Abusey Junction was viewed 23 million times on YouTube. In February 2020, they won Best Group at the Urban Music Awards. In September 2020, they performed at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.
They released their debut album Could We Be More in August 2022 after several singles and an EP.
On 27 June 2026, Kokoroko received the prestigious Antônio-Carlos-Jobim Award, which recognises an artist who has particularly distinguished themselves in the field of global music. In the past, the Antonio-Carlos-Jobim Award has been presented at the Festival international de jazz de Montréal, among others, to King Sunny Ade in 2015, Paco de Lucìa in 2014, Richard Bona in 2010, Youssou N’Dour in 2011, Angélique Kidjo in 2007, and Salif Keita in 2006.
