About — The artist

The Orchestre Lamoureux is a French symphony orchestra, based in Paris. It has long performed at the Salle Pleyel, but also at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Salle Gaveau, and the Théâtre du Châtelet.

Founded in 1881 by Charles Lamoureux under the name Société des nouveaux concerts, it was initially created to promote new music to a wide audience, particularly that of Richard Wagner.

Building on this heritage, the Orchestre Lamoureux subsequently specialised in French music, of which it is now one of the greatest representatives. Having premiered several major works of the French repertoire (Le Boléro in its concert version and the Concerto en sol by Maurice Ravel, La Mer by Claude Debussy, España by Emmanuel Chabrier, etc.), it perpetuates this tradition of repertoire.

An associative orchestra since 1897, it has been recognised as a public utility since 1961. It is subsidised by the DRAC Île-de-France and the City of Paris, and receives support from patrons.

The orchestra recruits its permanent musicians through competitive examination from among music professionals and currently has 89 members.
