On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of her birth, the Opéra national de Paris opens its season by paying tribute to her through a show directed by Peter Sellars. Perle noire reveals the inner world hidden behind the luminous smile of Joséphine Baker, who was inducted into the Panthéon in 2021. Tyshawn Sorey's jazzy score, which he conducts on stage with the musicians of the International Contemporary Ensemble, highlights the exemplary and inspiring struggle of this artist who embraced stereotypes only to challenge them, ultimately finding freedom within an imposed identity.
