Yet Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concerto d’Aranjuez is a global classical music hit and you can certainly hum the theme of the Adagio, so beautiful that it has become a standard covered by Gil Evans and Miles Davis, Fairuz, Jim Hall and even… Demis Roussos! Composed in 1939 in a wounded Spain, this concerto suspends time and takes us into the gardens of the royal palace of Aranjuez, near Madrid, designed at the end of the 18th century as an oasis. The guitar first dances to a fandango rhythm, then weaves a melancholic dialogue with the instruments of the orchestra, particularly the clarinet, and finally dances again under the sun. A musical emblem of Spain, this concerto never descends into ‘espagnolade’ and has given the genre a pure masterpiece.
