Overview
Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse, who survived the genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda as a teenager, offers a valuable reflection on the responsibility of memory and the crucial place that the voices of survivors must hold within it.
On 18 June 1994, a few weeks before the end of the genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda, Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse's life was saved thanks to a humanitarian convoy. Long after the events, settled in France, she contacted the BBC team who had filmed her rescue.
She sought to find a trace of this unprecedented moment. Thus began a relentless investigation to reconstruct the events with witnesses scattered around the world: the other child survivors, humanitarian workers, and journalists.
The account of this fifteen-year quest was published in January 2024 and met with great critical success. Today, she brings this story and the testimonies found during and after the writing of the book to the stage, to be heard and seen.
