Before conquering America, Dvořák earned a living playing viola at the Prague Opera. It was there, at the heart of the orchestra, that he discovered the riches of the symphonic repertoire and the art of orchestration of his compatriot Smetana, who knew how to marry learned and popular traditions, and of Brahms, whose influence is particularly evident in the expressive role entrusted to the winds. In 1892, Dvořák was appointed director of the New York Conservatory. It was there that the New World Symphony, the American Quartet and the Cello Concerto, his last American work, were born. He slipped into it a melody from a lied he had composed for Josephina, his youthful love: Lasst mich allein (Leave me to my solitude).
