Schubert's string quartet La Jeune fille et la Mort (Death and the Maiden) is based on a lied written a few years earlier, where Death appears to a terrified young girl as a comforting rest. It is 1824: the musician knows he is condemned and pours his last strength into his work. This tension between dread and appeasement runs through the entire score. The first movement strikes with its tragic urgency. The second, variations on the lied's theme, establishes a calm gravity, like a meditation on the inevitable. The Scherzo, a sinister and nervous farce, reactivates the tension, while the Finale, a breathless macabre dance, seems to rush towards an inexorable fate. A true inner theatre where human fragility and fatality confront each other, the quartet was poorly received at its premiere. It would only triumph after the composer's death, as a tragic echo of Schubert's life.
