Born in Spain, trained in Rome, he returned to his native country with an absolute mastery of counterpoint, into which he infused a unique Spanish expressiveness. He left behind a body of work of remarkable scope, both in quantity and poetic richness, within which a significant corpus of Responsories stands out. These works unfold with the dark intensity characteristic of Iberian musicians of the time, certainly influenced by the rigorism of the kingdom's Catholic Church. Victoria demonstrates his immense compositional virtuosity while maintaining a modesty that goes straight to the heart. Drawing on the perfection and proverbial commitment of his ensemble Cantoría, Jorge Losana reconstructs Tenebrae Lessons by drawing from these sublime works.
