Overview
Valérie John offers an exploration of indigo blue as material, memory, and gesture. From Martinique to West Africa, her work weaves identities and narratives into assemblages seen as sensitive traces of the past
The monographic exhibition “I telman nwè ki i blé (So black it becomes blue)” presents Valérie John’s creations since the 1990s and her return to Martinique, where she chose to establish her “atelier-œuvre” (studio-artwork).
This act was a commitment to “create art” in immersion within her environment and in connection with the translocal memory of the place, in a gesture of shifting identity construction.
At the Palais de Tokyo, through paper and textile assemblages, installations, clothing, objects, and books, the artist offers an immersion into the metamorphoses of indigo: an aesthetic and sensory experience ranging from the deepest blue tones to the most vibrant black.
