On the banks of the Volga, in a small Russian village, lives a poetic soul: Katia Kabanova. How can one not feel suffocated in the company of a resigned husband and a tyrannical mother-in-law? Katia believes she can satisfy her thirst for the absolute in the arms of another man, but that's without counting on the sting of remorse that leads her to a tragic destiny. Drawing inspiration from Alexander Ostrovsky's play The Storm, Leoš Janáček delivered in 1921 at the Brno National Theatre the magnificent portrait of a sensitive and complex woman, torn between the strength of her desire and social pressure. Tender, lyrical, and ardent, the deeply emotional score is imbued with a shimmering orchestration. By transposing the work into the courtyard of an Eastern European building, where neighbours spy on each other or are bored, director Christoph Marthaler brings Katia Kabanova's inner drama to light.
