With this new creation, Martin Crimp returns to the musical form with his faithful collaborator Roald van Oosten. A music-hall show, a philosophical fable, and a bestiary of digital animals, The Animal Room blurs the lines between artificial and animal intelligence. This sparkling pop concert-theatre explores the tipping point where it becomes urgent to redefine our place as human beings in the living world. Carried by a musical fever and a desire to bring this “animal room” to life, Judith Chemla, French singer and actress, leads her musicians and the audience on a dizzying journey: that of the animal imagination. Each song embodies, in turn, an enraged chameleon, a philosophical cat, and other faunal creatures, revealing a presence in the world that now eludes humans. In a perpetually metamorphosing collage finely crafted by Quebec director Christian Lapointe, this playful quest bordering on the strange explores the limits of language, identity, and reason in a changing world.
