Impressions de Angelin Preljocaj

A danced programme as a tribute to Impressionist painting. Angelin Preljocaj creates, in three acts, living tableaux of fleeting beauty inspired by Gustave Caillebotte, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, and Claude Monet. A journey through eras, from yesterday to today. Superb.

More than anyone else, Angelin Preljocaj is a choreographer of emotions. Since his beginnings, he has magnified movement, creating a unique gestural language. He knows his classics as much as he invents his present, in motion. Above all, the artist he is feeds on literature, music, and painting. This is evidenced by this season's programme, inspired by some of the masterpieces from the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. As early as 1988, Angelin Preljocaj responded to a commission from the institution, bringing Caillebotte's painting Les Raboteurs de parquet to "dance", filmed at the time by Cyril Collard. Years later, Hommes au bain by the same artist became a duo signed by Preljocaj. A way to explore intimacy in a singular moment. The female counterpart to this duo, Femmes au bain, followed, evoking paintings by Degas. This programme, under the sign of Orsay and Impressionism, is now completed with a third part. Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe could well be the choreographer's source of inspiration. An invitation to reverie extended to every spectator. And the museum becomes, for an evening, the most beautiful dance stage. Philippe Noisette
