Spectacle - RENCONTRE LYRIQUE FRANCO-CHINOISE

The Franco-Chinese Lyric Encounter – From La Terre sauvage to Chinese and French Repertoires will bring together members of the artistic team as well as eminent singers from the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater.

Through the presentation of works, live vocal performances accompanied by piano, and exchanges with the audience, the artists will share the creative process and artistic specificities of Chinese opera.

The juxtaposition of great Chinese and French classics will thus open an artistic dialogue between different lyrical traditions.

The event will notably highlight excerpts from two original Chinese operas that have become classics: Le Regret pour le passé (Shangshi) and La Terre sauvage (Yuanye).

Adapted from Lu Xun's eponymous short story and composed by Shi Guangnan, Le Regret pour le passé expresses the destiny and inner world of its characters through a musical language that is both lyrical and deeply rooted in Chinese traditions.

La Terre sauvage, adapted from Cao Yu's famous play, with a libretto by Wan Fang and music by Jin Xiang, is distinguished by the strength of its dramatic conflicts and the intensity of its musical expression; the work testifies to the research and creativity of Chinese opera in literary adaptation as well as in the fusion of Chinese musical language and Western opera forms.

Great classics of French opera will also be honored. The audience will be able to hear "Salut! demeure chaste et pure," an excerpt from Faust, as well as the famous "Habanera" from Carmen, presented alongside several emblematic arias from Chinese opera.

Through their own musical languages and modes of dramatic expression, Chinese and French works will thus resonate with each other.
