Overview

From the concrete of large urban housing estates to the strata of history, Bâtir is a stage investigation that questions the traces – visible and invisible – of our colonial heritage in our ways of inhabiting and thinking about the city.

Following on from the work begun with Koulounisation, presented at the TPM in 2023, Salim Djaferi continues a style of writing that blends documentary theatre, performance, and collective memory.

With his new show, he attempts to reveal the invisible traces of the colonial legacy in housing policies. His starting point: the large housing estates of Seine-Saint-Denis, where he grew up, resemble the estates built in French Algeria in the 1950s.

Seeking to understand the reasons for these architectural similarities, he investigates with relatives, residents, and researchers, cross-referencing intimate accounts, testimonies, and archival documents to unveil what shapes our cities and our ways of inhabiting them.
