« Un coin de Paradis » de Josette Baïz Groupe Grenade

Take a dose of contemporary, add a pinch of breakdance, spice it up with a dash of classical, and shake it all with African dance. The popular show invented by choreographer José Montalvo will be recreated for the talented young dancers of Groupe Grenade, directed by Josette Baïz. This show remains a joyfully mixed hymn to good humour.

Its creation almost thirty years ago caused a revolution. A flagship work by a duo trained in both classical and contemporary dance, and curious about urban dances, Montalvo-Hervieu's "Paradis" became an XXL manifesto for the diversity of styles, bodies, music, and aesthetics.

Its whimsical and humorous universe, inspired by the art of collage and surprise, struck a chord with all audiences, touching "the childlike part that everyone carries within themselves".

The recreation of this colourful and tender Eden by Groupe Grenade seems an obvious choice: it too was born in 1997, in the northern districts of Marseille. Composed solely of young dancers, children and teenagers, it develops a choreographic language that transcends borders.

In 2026, its director Josette Baïz therefore wanted to revive a cult show that echoes her own approach, and whose message of joyful fraternity is more necessary than ever.

As a nod, her recreation inserts video excerpts of the original performers, a complicit way to celebrate the double anniversary of a key moment in dance.
